From the moment we arrived, the experience was seamless. The front desk staff greeted us with champagne and had our bags brought directly to the room. A small touch, but it set the tone well. The building itself is a standout. It is a beautifully preserved historic structure with decor that feels intentional and well-executed throughout. Our room was comfortable and well-appointed. The bed was excellent, and the shower deserves its own mention: strong rainfall pressure, consistently hot water, and high-quality shampoo, conditioner, and body wash that made it hard to step out. The one issue we encountered was a non-functioning air conditioning unit in our room. The hotel attempted a repair, but it could not be resolved. What they did next stood out: they comped the night without hesitation. That response turned a frustrating situation into a demonstration of genuine hospitality. Overall, San Francisco Proper delivers on its reputation. The service, the atmosphere, and the accommodations are all at a high level. The AC situation was a hiccup, but the way it was handled reflects well on the property. Would recommend without reservation.
Amazing check in. Cool lobby, Champaign at check in, early check in, ac thermostat keeps turning off so room was constantly changing between cold and hot, maintenance came to try to fix it but was unable to. Breakfast was terrible, had waffle which was a burnt hard disk, 30 with tax, wasn’t worth 5 dollars. Shower is hot but almost no pressure, super delicious room coffee though. Have to call room service for ice. Room top bar was great. Waiter was Jose and he was great.
The hotel itself is nice. The room was clean and comfortable, the rooftop bar is awesome (although pricey for the quality- the sliders were delicious though), the food was overall good, and the valet service was great. The location though………. I don’t even know how to properly describe it in words. I had read the area is rough, with a lot of drug use and homelessness, but I was baffled. I know there is not really much the hotel can do about it, but I am kind of surprised that Marriott would establish a nice hotel in that area (which has been a dump for years). I am even more surprised this is part of The Edit Collection for Chase and The Hotel Collection for Amex. You simply cannot leave at night, and even during the day is questionable, especially if you’re not used to navigating major cities (aka- walking by homeless and drug users). Literally walked outside and about 10 feet away, there was a man without pants on, fully defecating in the middle of the sidewalk. It even looked exactly like the emoji. 💩 In a pile right outside the hotel. The entire surrounding area was exactly on par with Kensington in Philly IYKYK. Open air drug market, people actively using in broad daylight, needles on the ground, feces all over the place, and fenty-folds scattered all over the place like a zombie apocalypse. Overall inside the hotel is nice, but I would not recommend it to anyone I care about.
Room was well designed, complete with Aesop amenities and comfortable bedding. Staff, food and onsite gym were great. Only knocked a point due to the unhoused population that surround the hotel, which at times feels unsafe. Something to consider if you’re traveling alone / nature of your trip to SF.
Absolutely DO NOT STAY HERE We booked this hotel for a night and inquired about a reservation for the same night at their Rooftop Lounge. One of their staff, Archie, emailed me that he had us booked at the Rooftop Lounge for the of our stay* We found out several days before to that the reservation was made for a different night and the hotel could not accommodate us. It took four phone calls to finally reach someone about this* It is terrible to book a hotel and for you, as a guest, to not be able to use their amenities. It is truly terrible when the hotel’s staff promise make broken promises that you yourself have to investigate. *screenshots included ****Follow up. I asked, Gerard, on the 27th to cancel our reservation (yes, I spent time on thanksgiving dealing with this hotel's blunders). He said he would cancel it and I would not be charged. On the 28th, I saw that my reservation had not been cancelled so I had to go and cancel it online myself. more of the same poor service. Also, received a reply from Larissa Mereora below. The "your experice does not reflect the standards we expect.." If you are to look up this hotel on Trip Advisor, one out of every three or four reviews mentions mistakes like this. Her empty promise of "we are addressing this internally to prevent it from happening again," is an empty lie. Just look at reviews on Trip Advisor and what the complaints are. These issues happen over and over without correction.
